Since its conception nearly 100 years ago, Club América has been one of the most successful teams not only in Mexico itself, but also in North America. The team, located in Mexico City, plays in the Primera División, the top professional league in the country. Throughout the team’s history, they have been so successful that they have never been relegated to the second division, a feat only one other team can boast. The team plays its games at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. Estadio Azteca has a capacity of 115,000 people, making it the largest stadium in Mexico, as well as the third largest soccer stadium in the entire world. Due to its immense size, Azteca has been the sight of many major events, including the Championship games of both the 1970 and 1986 World Cup, as well as the 1968 Summer Olympics, the 1975 Pan American Games and many more.
The team was formed in 1916, and at its inclusion into the Mexican Football League, they were the only team in Mexico City that featured a team of all Mexicans. After a slow beginning, the team won a league championship by 1924 and had established themselves as one of the preeminent teams in Mexico. The 1930s and 1940s were difficult for the team, as they could not reach the same level of success they had achieved. It was not until 1959 when Emilio Azcarraga Milmo, the owner of Televisa purchased the team did they have a resurgence. By 1964, the team won the Copa Mexico, and due to aggressive scouting and spending tactics, the team reached new levels of success, winning ten league championships under Azcarraga.
Throughout the team’s history, they have garnered a great amount of success, nearly all of which coming after 1959 when the team changed hands. Such accolades include eight FIFA recognized international club trophies, including five CONCACAF Champions’ Cups, two Copa Interamericana cups, and one CONCACAF Giants Cup.
Club América’s greatest rivalry game is between them and Guadalajara. These two teams have met more than 200 times, with América having compiled a record of 73-63-69 against their bitter rival. While these two teams have been rivals dating back to the 1960s, the intensity increased significantly when in both 1983 and 1986, the players on each of the teams brawled one another.
América is one of the most popular teams in the country. According to a recent poll, América is the country’s most popular team; however, they are also the most hated team. In 2012, América finished third in the tables, and featured top goal scorer Christian Benitez.
