The Davis Cup tournament originally began back in 1900 and was created to be a tennis competition specifically between the United States and Great Britain. Since its inception, the tournament has grown into the world’s largest annual international team competition in tennis today with more than 130 nations annually participating in the tournament. Although it began specifically for the United States and Britain through the years, the event has been seen as one of the biggest gatherings of the world’s best tennis players. The integration of other countries has also brought about new dominating forces in the game outside of the United States and Great Britain and countries like Spain, Russian and Australia began establishing themselves as forces in the game for the first time.
As the largest global tennis competition, some of the biggest legends in the sport have gathered to compete in the tournament. The event is set up in a knockout format and the top 16 nations in the world participate in group format of the tournament, adding a completely new team element to the competition. This format has made the Davis Cup one of the most unique tournaments in tennis today and has also made it the most watched, as countries are allowed to compete together in order to win the first place ‘team’ prize. While there have been numerous individual winners from all different nations, the United States currently holds the record for most team wins in the history of the tournament.
This isn’t the only unique aspect of the Davis Cup either. Unlike other professional tennis tournaments, the cup is not held in the same place every year. Based of its initial format where the United States and Great Britain would rotate hosting duties, the Davis Cup now travels to different countries every year, and has been held in countries and arenas all over the globe. While the physical atmosphere of the Davis Cup is always changing, one thing that remains the same with this particular tournament is the atmosphere of the crowds and the fans. Year after year, since the tournament first started, the Davis Cup has drawn in some of the largest tennis crowds in the history of the sport as fans of the game gather to see the world’s greatest players in action.
