The Edmonton Oilers were established in 1972 as Alberta Oilers. The team was the member of the World Hockey Association. After few disheartened seasons, the Oilers finish first in the WHA standings with league-best 48–30–2 record in 1978-79. The Oilers joined the National Hockey League for 1979–80. The Oilers won their first Playoff series in 1980–81 after defeating Montreal Canadiens. The success continued. The team finished second overall in the following season. They rounded up their 1982-83 season at third place overall. The following season was the one of the glorious year of the team. The Oilers finished first overall in the NHL. They won 57 games and earned 119 points, which is a franchise record. The Oilers scored a grand total of 446 goals as a team. This became an NHL record. In 1984-85, the team finished second overall in the NHL with 49 wins and 109 points. The Oilers were again the top team in the NHL during the 1985–86 regular season with 56 wins and 119 points. In 2007–08, the Oilers had a 16–21–4 record after the first half of the season. They improved their score in the second half to 25–14–2 in forty-one games for a final record of 41–35–6. The Edmonton Oilers have won the 5 Stanley Cups, 7 conference championships, 2 presidents' trophies and 9 division championships.
