The Houston Rodeo, may be known as a few different names, but this larger than life Texas rodeo and livestock show is unmistakable for fans of the sport. Often called the Houston Livestock Show and Rode, RodeoHouston or the HLSR, this event is one of the most popular rodeos in the country to date. Currently the Houston Rodeo is the largest live entertainment and livestock exhibition in the entire world. The Houston Rodeo was also named as the richest regular-season rodeo event ever as well. While these figures may be impressive to many, for fans of this rodeo event it is the spectacular show that makes the Houston Rodeo so memorable.
This livestock show and rode was first introduced in 1931, and every year since then it has been providing fans of rodeo events with unforgettable entertainment experiences. Although it was previously held at the Astrodome, the Houston Rodeo has since moved to the Reliant Stadium, a massive Houston based arena that the rodeo is known for quickly filling up. In fact the 2011 Houston Rode set an attendance record and had nearly 2.3 million in attendance. Hosting this many people at such a large high-stakes event took the work of more than 24,000 volunteers who come out annually to help make this rodeo possible.
The Houston Rodeo is more than just a night or even a day of entertainment this spectacular even lasts for 20 whole days of fun. The Friday before the Houston rodeo begins the city takes part in their “Go Texan Day” a day where people from all over the city dress in western wear and celebrate the city of Houston and the state of Texas in anticipation for this over-the-top rodeo Typically the Houston Rodeo kicks off downtown in city hall and features a parade, a run and the World Championship Bar-B-Que Contest. When the live rodeo events kick off, fans can not only expect live rodeo action, but also a carnival, international win competition, shopping and livestock sales. The actual rode events not only host rodeo action but livestock competitions and pig racing as well. The Houston Rodeo also typically has a number of concerts during the 20 day long celebration as well.
