Every year, fans of NASCAR gather in Avondale, Arizona at the Phoenix International Raceway to attend the Kobalt Tools 500. This NASCAR Sprint Cup stock car race is one of the 36 races held each year that help determine who will win the coveted NASCAR Sprint Cup. The race, although it operates under the Kobalt Tools name is actually sponsored by Lowe’s, who gave the naming sponsorship to their Kobalt Tools brand for promotional purposes. During its history, which began in 1988 when Alan Kulwicki won the inaugural event.
The event has rarely had the same naming sponsor for more than two years and has been known under many different entities, but the track distance and location have always remained the same. The Kobalt Tools 500, has always been a 500 kilometer event instead of a 500 mile event meaning it is 312 miles and 312 laps. This makes it on the shorter end of many of the races in the cup, but also one of the most exciting as well. However, in 2011, the track underwent some new configurations, while the distance remained the same the track was distinctly different for drivers with the new modifications.
The race is known for being a favorite among a few different drivers who have done well in the competition over the past few years, but Jimmie Johnson is most noted for his success at this race. The driver, under sponsorship won the event three years in a row beginning in 2007, and his first win of the event marked a hot streak, four consecutive race wins for the driver. These type of record-breaking events have long characterized the Kobalt Tools 500 race and made it an exciting event for both drivers and fans to participate in.
Every year since the event first began, the race has been covered by national television broadcasting, mostly on channels ESPN, TNN, and ABC.The event is televised nationally every year as it is one of the most watched races as it serves as an important race in the determination of the Sprint Cup winner.
