Liverpool FC is widely considered one of the top teams in the English Premier League, with a stellar record as well as being one of the oldest teams in the EPL. Liverpool was founded in 1892, and has played at Anfield since its conception. Anfield, which originally housed Everton, was opened in 1884, and can hold 45,276 people, is located in the Anfield section of Liverpool, England.

Liverpool was originally founded when Everton wanted to move out of Anfield, John Houlding, owner of the land at Anfield, created a new team to play at his stadium. Liverpool’s first taste of success came in in 1901 when it won the First Division, and won again in 1906. In 1914 the team reached its first FA Cup Final, losing 1-0 to Burnley F.C. After winning the league championship in 1922 and 1923, the team went on a lengthy cold-spell, not winning another league title until 1946-47. The team fell upon a period of poor performance and was relegated in 1953 to the Second Division, making it back to the First Division in 1962.
In 1965, just three years after being promoted back into the First Division, the team won its first of seven FA Cups. Success starting coming quickly, especially during the 1970s and 1980s when Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley led the team to eleven league titles. Throughout the team’s rich history, they have won eighteen EPL titles to go along with seven FA Cups, and eight League cups. They have also won five European Cups, to go along with three UEFA Cups and three UEFA Super Cups.
Liverpool has one of the highest average home attendance figures in Europe and features a fervent fan-base. Liverpool’s most ardent supporters are known as the Kopites. Their ardent fan base has at times been an issue for them as they have been a part of two tragedies, including the 1985 Heysel Stadium disaster where Liverpool supporters managed to knock a wall down, killing 39 Juventus fans. The other such incident happened in 1989 when 96 Liverpool fans died due to overcrowding in an incident known as the Hillsborough disaster.
Liverpool due to their storied history has a series of rivals; however, none are greater than their rivalry with Everton. Despite no geographical, political, or religious splits between the two sets of fan bases, the so-called Merseyside Derby is one of the most hotly contested games of the season between the two sides. Liverpool is also in a fierce rivalry with Manchester United as the two team’s success has fostered quite a rivalry between the two.
