Based in the city of Minneapolis, Minnesota is the NFL and North Division NFC member team the Minnesota Vikings. The Vikings were first established back in 1960 as an expansion team and played their first ever NFL game in 1961. Since that inaugural season the Minnesota Vikings have gone on to have one of the highest winning percentages in the NFL to date. During these many winning seasons, the Vikings have made it to the playoffs 24 times, the third most in NFL history. With eleven members currently in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, the team also has one of the most substantial collections of big name players in the history of the sport. They have also had big name players such as Randy Moss, Brett Favre, Adrian Peterson and Daunte Culpepper wear the purple and gold uniforms as well.
Many of these famous players have played at the team’s current arena, now called the Mall of America Field at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome. This stadium has been the home of the Minnesota Vikings since 1982. However, the team is slated to have a new stadium open in the city by 2016. No matter where they are playing the Minnesota Vikings can be recognized by their bright purple, gold and white uniforms, by their “Skol, Vikings” fight song and the iconic appearance of their mascot, Viktor the Viking. While some may call them by their colors “The Purple and Gold,” their full list of team nicknames includes “The Vikes,” “The Purple” “The Purple Pride,” and “The Purple People Eaters.”
No matter what fans want to call the Vikings there is no mistaking the impact that this team has had on the NFL. Not only have they established one of the most successful records in the league, but they have also managed to be part of several iconic rivalries within the NFL. The team is known for having long established rivalries with other area teams including the Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions and the Green Bay Packers. No matter what team they are playing and whether they are matching up against rivals or not, whoever plays the Minnesota Vikings can expect a few things from fans. Not only will they hear the support of what are considered to be some of the most enthusiastic fans in the league but they will see thousands wear their Vikings “Helga Hats” and sport the “Vikings Horn’ during all of the teams match ups.
