The New Orleans Hornets are a professional basketball team in the National Basketball Association. The team is located in New Orleans, Louisiana and play their home games at the New Orleans Arena. The New Orleans Arena has a capacity of 18,500 and opened in 1999. The team plays in the Southwest Division of the Western Conference and is currently coached by Monty Williams. The team was founded in 1988 as the Charlotte Hornets before moving to New Orleans for the start of the 2002 season. Between 2005 and 2007, the team bounced between New Orleans, Baton Rouge, and Oklahoma City because of the effects of Hurricane Katrina on both the city of New Orleans and New Orleans Arena.
Throughout the course of their 24-year history, the team has made the playoffs 12 times. The team has only won one division title, in 2008. The team has never won a conference title. The team has featured only one Hall of Famer, Robert Parish who played for the team from 1994 through 1996; however, most of Parish’s accomplishments came while a member of the Celtics. Larry Johnson and Chris Paul won Rookie of the Year in 1992 and 2006 respectively. Dell Curry won Sixth Man of the Year in 1994. Glen Rice won the All-Star Game MVP award in 1997. Byron Scott won Coach of the Year in 2008. The team has retired the numbers of two of its players: “Pistol” Pete Maravich for his role on the New Orleans Jazz as well as his contributions as a player for the LSU Tigers, as well as Bobby Phills. Five former Hornets were named NBA Rookie First Team players: Kendall Gill, Larry Johnson, Alonzo Mourning, Chris Paul, and Darren Collison. Bob Bass won Executive of the Year in 1997.
The team has featured nine head coaches throughout the team’s history with Dave Cowens achieving the highest winning percentage, garnering a .609 winning percentage throughout his three seasons. Coach Paul Silas led the team through the transition from Charlotte to New Orleans, and garnered a 13-14 record in the playoffs in the process.
