The team has featured 17 different head coaches in their more than 50 year history, starting with Sammy Baugh. Weeb Ewbank, tapped as the first General Manager of the team, is the only Jets coach to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. In his tenure as coach, Ewbank led the Jets to a 71-77-6 record. Bill Parcells, Al Groh, and current coach Rex Ryan are the only three Jets head coaches to hold winning records in their tenure with the Jets. Walt Michaels is the only Jets head coach to be named Coach of the Year when he won the award in 1978. The Jets have made the playoffs 14 times, 12 of which have come in the NFL, most recently in 2010. The team has won four total division championships, two of which have come in the NFL. The team has never won a conference championship; however, they did win Super Bowl III.
The Jets have featured three players enshrined into the Hall of Fame: Joe Namath, Curtis Martin, and Ronnie Lott. In addition to Namath and Martin, Joe Klecko’s number has been retired. In the Jets Ring of Honor, eleven players and Ewbank find themselves honored including Jets greats Al Toon and Don Maynard as well as those whose numbers have been retired.
The Jets have three main rivals: division foes the Miami Dolphins and the New England Patriots as well as their in-town rival, the New York Giants. The Dolphins and Jets have faced off 94 times with the Jets holding a 49-44-1 lead. The rivalry between the Patriots and the Jets is one of the fiercest in the NFL, as their rivalry seeks to match the intensity of the Red Sox and Yankees rivalry. The two teams have faced off 103 times in the regular season with each team taking 51 games; however, the Patriots hold a 2-1 lead in the playoffs. The Jets and the Giants have only faced off 12 times due to the teams playing in different conferences. The Giants lead the series 8-4; having won the last five in a row dating back to 1996.
