Oakland Athletics History
The Athletics are one of the most storied franchises in all of baseball. They came into the league in Major 1901. The "Athletics" name originates from the late 19th century "athletic clubs", specifically the Philadelphia Athletes baseball club. They originally started in Philadelphia but moved to Kansas City in 1955. They won three of four World Series from 1910 to 1914 (the "First Dynasty") and two in a row in 1929 and 1930 (the "Second Dynasty"). After having 13 uneventful seasons in the Midwest, the team moved out west to Oakland in 1968. A Third Dynasty emerged in Oakland and the team won three World Championships in a row from 1972 to 1974 led by outstanding players like Catfish Hunter and Reggie Jackson.
In the late 80’s the A’s won three consecutive pennants and the 1989 World Series. They also rattled off a 20 game winning streak. They had Mark McGwire & Jose Canseco know as the bash brothers to go along with starting pitchers Bob Welch & Dave Stewart along with super closer Dave Eckersley. The ballpark formally known as Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum has been changed as the naming rights have been sold and is now known as the Overstock.com Coliseum. The 2012 season was the A’s best season in almost ten years and being handicapped by budget constraints the A’s typically work to find deals & with their excellent scouting; they tend to find the players other teams overlook. The formula seems to be working as they are poised in 2013 to make some noise in the American League so get your tickets now & be the first to enjoy the upcoming season.
