Berthed from the 2010 expansion of the Major League Soccer (MLS), the Philadelphia Union is one of the newest yet most promising teams in the American league. Although they represent the city of Philadelphia, the team actually plays in the satellite city of Chester Pennsylvania, at their home soccer stadium in PPL Park. The Philadelphia Union was the sixteenth team to join the MLS. Sporting uniforms of navy and gold, the team’s jerseys were designed to represent the primary colors of the Continental Army’s uniforms as worn during the American Revolution.
Playing in the Eastern Conference, the team has faced a number of the league’s best competitors, yet managed to place highly in conference rankings since their inception. The Philadelphia Union made their MLS debut against the Seattle Sounders FC, and although they failed to pull out a victory, they quickly went on to win several early wins during the season and set numerous ticket sales records for their debut season. Although they play most of their games at a 18,500 seat soccer stadium in PPL Park, the team has also been known to play several games in Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia; which allows for more than double their home stadium’s seating capacity.
After just a year in the league, the team announced that they would be entering a four-year sponsorship agreement with Bimbo Bakeries USA. The company made MLS history as it not only acted as the team’s jersey sponsor but became the bread and baked goods partner of the Union and MLS; an was one of the largest sponsorship deals in the league.
The current roster of the Philadelphia Union includes several top players from all over the world. The team has also had numerous legendary former players wear the navy and gold uniforms, including Danny Califf, Justin Mapp and Michael Orozco Fiscal. The Union is currently owned by a group of investors deemed Keystone Sport and Entertainment and in the 2012 season have been playing under interim coach John Hackworth.
Although they are one of the youngest teams in the league, their inexperience has not hindered their success. With their second season showing major improvements in overall and conference rankings, the Philadelphia Union have set significant goals for the 2012 season and beyond to become one of the most winningest teams in the MLS.
