Portland Timbers Tickets
Although their 2009 establishment makes the Portland Timbers one of the newest teams in the MLS, the legacy of the Timbers name has had a very long and detailed history. The Timbers name first originated in the old North American Soccer League in 1975, through the years four different Portland teams have shared this name as well. The current Portland Timbers soccer club in the MLS was brought in to replace the USL First Division team, who also shared the same name. When the new MLS Timbers team was formed they became the 18th club in the Major League Soccer.
After two years of discussion and speculation, the Portland Timbers debuted in 2009, under the instruction of president Merritt Paulson. However, it would be two more years before the transition was complete and Portland officially had a MLS team to call their own. The team is currently owned by Peregrine Sports and as of 2012 have been under the leadership of head coach John Spencer. The Portland Timbers currently play their home games at Jeld-Wen field in Portland, a field that allows for more than 20,000 at full capacity. Although the Portland Timbers formed in 2009, they did not make their official debut in the MLS until the 2011 season, making them one of the newest clubs in the league.
The team currently plays in the MLS’s Western Conference, and sports ponderosa and moss green colors to represent the famed forests of their home state of Oregon. The current Portland Timbers team roster has players from all different countries who have come together to form the team. This includes players such as Kenny Cooper, one of the team’s leading scorers. Player such as Troy Perkins, Mike Fuctio and Eric Brunner have all worn the Portland Timbers uniforms as well.
The first season for the Portland Timbers did not garner them a place in the playoffs, but due to their new status in the league and their transition from the less competitive USL First Division, their debut season was seen as a success by many. After many nationally televised games and major wins against successful, established teams, the Portland Timber’s first season in the MLS garnered the team a number of loyal fans and followers.
