The Portland Trail Blazers are a professional basketball team in the National Basketball Association. The team is located in Portland, Oregon and plays their homes games at the Rose Garden. The Rose Garden has a capacity of 19,980 and opened in 1995. The team plays in the Northwest Division of the Western Conference and is currently coached by Terry Stotts. The team was founded in 1970 and the team is the only professional sports team in the state of Oregon.

The Trail Blazers have made the playoffs 29 times throughout the course of their more than 40 year existence. The team reeled off an impressive 21-season streak between 1983 and 2003, the second most in NBA history. The team has won four division titles, most recently in 1999. The team has won three conference titles: 1977, 1990, and 1992. The team won its first and only championship in 1977. Six players enshrined in the Hall of Fame played for the Trail Blazers: Lenny Wilkens, Bill Walton, Clyde Drexler, Dražen Petrovic, Arvydas Sabonis, and Scottie Pippen. Bill Walton was the only member of the Trail Blazers to win MVP when he won the award in 1978. Three former Trail Blazers won Rookie of the Year: Geoff Petrie in 1971, Sidney Wicks in 1972, and Brandon Roy in 2007. Mike Schuler and Mike Dunleavy each won Coach of the Year in 1987 and 1999 respectively.
The Trail Blazers have had two main rivals: the Los Angeles Lakers and their now defunct rivalry against the Seattle SuperSonics. The Lakers and Trail Blazers’ rivalry flourished at the end of the 20th century as the Lakers reign over the Western Conference was being superseded by the newly found prominence of the Clyde Drexler led Trail Blazers. When they were still in Seattle, the SuperSonics had a geographic rivalry with the Trail Blazers. The “I-5 Rivalry” as it was known due to both teams residing on Interstate 5, was closely contested, as both teams were roughly equal with one another during their tenure in Seattle. The Sonics lead the series 98-94 before the franchise’s move to Oklahoma City derailed the rivalry.
