The San Jose Sharks had entered into the world of hockey in 1991. After two disappointing seasons, the Sharks finished their third season with a 33-35-16 record. The team made the playoff appearance with 82 points. They were seeded eighth in the Western Conference playoffs. The Sharks faced the heavily favored Detroit Red Wings in the Western Conference to win the Stanley Cup. They shocked the Red Wings in the seven games. Joe Louis Arena, Jamie Baker scored the game-winning goal in match 7 and the Sharks won by a score of 3-2. In 1994–95 season, the Sharks earned their second straight playoff berth and entered into the second round again. But the team failed to go further in the series. The Sharks returned to the playoffs in 1997–98. The Sharks finished with their first-ever winning record in the following season. They defeated the St. Louis Blues, who had finished first overall in the league that year. Goalie Evgeni Nabokov won the Calder Memorial Trophy as the league's best rookie in 2000-01 season. In the following year, the team was sold to a group of local investors headed by team president Greg Jamison. The San Jose Sharks have won a presidents' trophy in 2008–09 season and 6 division championships since their establishment. The team play their home games at HP Pavilion at San Jose.
