The NASCAR race known as the Sylvania 300 race is an annual stock car event held in Loudon, New Hampshire at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Every year NASCAR fans from all over the country come together to watch this exciting NASCAR event. One of the biggest distinctions held by the Sylvania 300 its that it is the only race outside of Daytona and Talladega to run a restrictor plate race. This race was the first held after the deaths of Adam Petty and Kenny Irwin Jr. during a short span of time where the league attempted to make the cars safer. The restrictor plates slowed down the cars drastically to prevent crashes, making these particular races clock in times that were significantly less fast than other races of its league.
Since its inception in 1997, the date of the race has only be rescheduled one time, the rest of the races have been held in mid-September on the same weekend. The date was the perfect timing for the race to serve as the opening round of the “Chase for the Sprint Cup” the ten-race “play off” in the Sprint Cup Series. The race held this role from 2004 until 2010. The “Chase for the Sprint Cup” was designed to feature the top ten (or 12 since 2007) drivers in NASCAR. This made the Sylvania a huge event for many NASCAR events. While still a part of the ten race “chase” playoffs, after NASCAR’s 2011 realignment it is now the second race in the playoff.
In 2004, the race made history again when it was the first race in the Chase for the Nextel Cup format, that included a brand new points system. A few years later in 2010, the victory from Chris Bowyer in the cup was tainted from illegal car modifications and brought in a whole new car inspection aspect to the sport of NASCAR. It is events like this that have made the Sylvania 300 one of the most notable events in NASCAR and a race that fans love tuning in to see.
