In the sport of NASCAR one of the most coveted happenings in the entire sport is the ten race event known as the Chase for the Sprint Cup. This group of races serves as the major “playoff” event in the sport of NASCAR, and it is held at the end of the season to determine who will win the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series stock car race. The stakes of this event are high as the top 12 racers from the first 26 race leg of the series are brought together to compete for points to determine who will be awarded the cup. The Tums Fast Relief 500 is a unique race not only in the fact that it serves as an instrumental event in the final stretch of the “Chase for the Sprint Cup” but it also has a few other unique features as well. in 2012 the actual sponsorship of the event will be given back to GlaxoSmithKline. The winners of this event also traditionally receive a custom-built grandfather clock for winning the event, a unique gesture not often seen in the sport. Since the track does not have permanent lights installed, the race has one of the earliest start times, beginning at 1:30 PM EST.
The 250 mile or 500 lap event has been held in Ridgeway, Virginia since 1950. The race is not only one of the longest standing in the sport but it is also known for actually having some of the longest race times. Due to the restrictions in the race, even though the event is only 263 miles, average finish times are often well over three and a half hours and average speeds are typically around 70 mph or less, usually about half of the average race speeds. The difference in the Tums Fast Relief 500 race actually makes it a popular race for fans. The event provides an entirely new environment for racers to show off their skills as they compete to win the coveted Sprint NASCAR Cup for their own.
