The Western and Southern Open, or the Cincinnati Masters or Cincinnati Open, as it is often called, is the annual outdoors hard tennis tournament held annually in Ohio. The tournament, which is currently being sponsored by the Western and Southern Financial Group is currently held in the Cincinnati suburb, Mason. While there are a few different things that make this particular tournament a favorite among tennis fans, it is the tournaments impressive history that makes it such a staple to the sport.
On September 18, 1899, the first annual Cincinnati Open was held in Cincinnati, making it the oldest tennis tournament in the United States that is still played in its original city. For over a century, this tennis tournament has been bringing some of the sport’s biggest names to Ohio to battle on the hard court for the coveted monetary prize. With millions at stake in this tournament alone, the Western and Southern Open is noted for having some of the most grueling and intense matches the sport has ever seen.
These factors have made the Western and Southern Open the biggest summer tennis event in the United States today. The men’s bracket of the tournament serves as one of the nine elite Masters 1000 tournaments held throughout the season and is part of the ATP World Tour. The women’s portion of the tournament on the other hand is one of the five Premier 5 events held as part of the WTA Tour.
The tournament is typically held in August and brings tennis fans from all over the world to the Linder Family Tennis Center, where they can watch the action up close and personal on one of the 16 courts in the complex. Fans who journey to the tennis center can enjoy the only venue aside from the Grand Slams that has more than two permanent stadiums. Between the four stadiums, deemed Center Court, Grandstand Court, Court 4 and Court 9, fans can enjoy stadium seating that allows the best possible views of each match. The tournaments main events, held at Center Court, allow for a capacity of more than 11,000 fans at a time. With this high-level facility and the famed matches that often make up this tournament, the Western and Southern Open remains a must-see summer event for fans of both mens and womens tennis.
