“Big Time Tennis, Severed Southern Style.” This is the slogan now adorning the annual Winston Salem Open. The now southern based annual professional tennis tournament, the Winston Salem Open has gone through many changes through the years, but since beginning in 1981 has brought some of the biggest names in tennis to Winston-Salem, North Carolina to battle on the hard court. Fans of the sport can travel to Wake Forest University in Winston Salem every summer to see the tournament unfold at the school’s tennis stadiums.
The tournament is part of the WPT league for women and the ATP for men. As part of the 250 tier of events, the tournament has been known for creating some of the most exciting pairings in the sport. Even though the name and the location itself have gone through several changes, the tournament has been around since 1981. Although its origin’s were actually in Long Island and New Haven, as of 2011 the tournament is planning on staying in its new North Carolina home. The nationally broadcasted tournament is slotted to take place at the end of August each year as one of the later summer tournaments in the season.
The North Carolina event not only strives to bring tennis fans with a week full of exciting play, but also has a variety of other events in store to celebrate the tournament. There is a USTA Member Appreciation day, a USO Military Appreciation Night, the official Corona Tennis Tailgate for fans, and a Ladies Day brunch just for women. With a full week of singles and doubles matches, events for children and exciting rounds of play, the tournament promises to deliver more than your average tennis tournament. The event is also known for bringing in some of the biggest names in the sport including 2011 winner John Isner, and American favorites such as Mardy Fish and Sam Querrey.
Fans can enjoy seeing these stars and more in the intimate seating provided by Wake Forest University for the event. As the event begins expanding in its new southern home, fans can expect even more tennis excitement from this tournament as it continues to grow in its new home and bring even more tennis greats to the court.
