WWE SummerSlam Tickets
SummerSlam is a professional wrestling event put on by the WWE in the summertime. SummerSlam is widely considered the second largest event on the WWE calendar after WrestleMania. SummerSlam is a pay-per-view event in August. After the success of the Royal Rumble, which was aired for free on the USA Network, gained millions of viewers, Vince McMahon, owner of the WWF as it was once known, decided that to balance the calendar, he needed a summer event to compliment the Royal Rumble in January, WrestleMania in March, and the Survivor Series in November. The first SummerSlam took place at Madison Square Garden in New York, New York on August 29, 1988.
The first main event for SummerSlam was a tag-team match featuring Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage vs. Ted DiBaise and André the Giant. After four years of holding the SummerSlam in the northeast of the United States, the fifth annual SummerSlam took place across the pond in London, England at Wembley Stadium. The main events featured Randy Savage against the Ultimate Warrior for the WWF Championship as well as Bret Hart against The British Bulldog for the WWF Intercontinental Championship. This event was the only SummerSlam to take place outside of the North America.
After one year abroad, SummerSlam came back stateside, this time to The Palace of Auburn Hills in Auburn Hills, Michigan. 2002 marked a change in the WWE, as wrestlers were confined to one show, either SmackDown or Raw, and as a result of that, the “big four” as they became known of the Royal Rumble, SummerSlam, Survivor Series, and WrestleMania, became the only events where one could see wrestlers and matches from both shows.
2004 marked the next time the event took place outside of the United States, traveling to Toronto, Ontario in Canada for the seventeenth edition of the event. The main event for this Canadian edition featured John “Bradshaw” Layfield pitted against The Undertaker for the WWE Championship as well as Chris Benoit against Randy Orton for the World Heavyweight Championship.
Since 2009, WWE’s SummerSlam has taken place at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. The next edition of SummerSlam is slated to take place once again at the Staples Center on August 19, 2012.
