St. Johns Red Storm Mens Basketball Tickets
The St. John’s Red Storm men’s basketball team is a Division I program for St. John’s University. The team is located in New York City, New York and plays their home games at the Carnesecca Arena and at Madison Square Garden. The Carnesecca Arena has a capacity of 6,008 people and opened in 1961. Madison Square Garden has a capacity of 19,763 people and opened in 1968. The team at this point plays the majority of their non-conference schedule at Carnesecca Arena and their important non-conference games as well as virtually all Big East games at Madison Square Garden. The team plays in the Big East Conference. The team is currently coached by Steve Lavin. In his two years as head coach of the Red Storm, Lavin has led the team to a 34-31 record, as well as a trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2011.
After playing its first games in 1907, the team has been one of the top programs in the country. The team made its first NCAA Tournament in 1951, making it to the Elite Eight that year. Under Frank McGuire, the team made the Final Four the following season and under McGuire, the team went 102-36. Lou Carnesecca took over in 1965 and during his 24 seasons as head coach, made 18 NCAA Tournament appearances, and one Final Four in 1985. Carnesecca is the third in a long line of Hall of Fame coaches, including the aforementioned McGuire and Joe Lapchick, who won 334 games in his tenure as coach. Carnesecca went on to go 526-200, winning six Big East Championships.
The Red Storm, formerly the Redmen, have featured 53 players selected in the NBA Draft. Thirteen of those players were selected in the first round, most recently Moe Harkless with the fifteenth overall selection by the Philadelphia 76ers. The Red Storm plays a variety of rivalry games; however, due to both team’s prominence in the 1980s, the game against the Georgetown Hoyas takes on a little more importance. The Johnnies also play a rivalry game against the Seton Hall Pirates, as both Catholic schools fight for regional dominance as the Pirates play in nearby Newark.
