The Stanford Cardinal started playing football in 1892. They are the top-ranked academic institution with an FBS program. The team made it to their first bowl game in 1902. They faced the Michigan in the Rose Bowl but unfortunately lost the game. The Stanford Cardinal has an all-time record of 676–455–52 for a winning percentage of .593. They also have the winning series records against all of its Pac-12 North rivals. The Cardinal has recorded the most wins under the head coach Glenn "Pop" Warner. They became the national champions in 1926. The 1940 season was one of the most glorious years of the team. They went undefeated and untied in the season. They defeated the Nebraska in the rose bowl by a score of the 21–13. The team was ranked #2 in the final AP poll because it was released before the game played. The Stanford has finished at least one season in the top 10 list in six different decades. They finished the 2010 season in number 5 position. The Stanford Cardinal recently won the Orange Bowl in 2011 after defeating the Virginia Tech with 40-12. The team play their home games at Stanford Stadium.
