Syracuse Orangemen History
The Syracuse Orangemen were established in 1889. They achieved success in the 1890’s and 1900’s. They made their first bowl appearance in the 1953 Orange Bowl. In 1957, the team gave outstanding performance and made it to the 1957 Cotton Bowl Classic. The team has an undefeated season in 1959. They earned their first National Championship and defeated the Texas in the bowl game and captured the Cotton Bowl Classic. In 1981, Dick MacPherson was hired as the head coach of the Syracuse. They saw another undefeated 11-0 regular season in 1987. After some disappointing seasons, the Orangemen experienced the glorious phase during 1988-2001season. They appeared in 11 bowl games during that period and won 9 games. In 2005, Greg Robinson became the head coach of the team. The Syracuse defeated Big East and Sugar Bowl Champion West Virginia. They also beat the Buffalo with 31-0. The Orange finished the regular season with a winning record in 2010 for the first time since the 2001 season at 7-5. This also includes road wins against #19 West Virginia and 2-time defending conference champions Cincinnati. Since their founding, the Syracuse Orangemen have won 4 conference championships. The team play their home games at Carrier Dome.
