Anything Goes Tickets
Anything Goes is an example of a classic musical theater with amazing tap numbers, unlikely happy endings, campy jokes and eminently hummable songs; “De-Lovely.” “I Get A Kick Out Of You” and “Anything Goes.” The musical has been revived four times and filmed twice over the years since 1934.
The musical was based on an original idea from producer; Vinton Freedley was living on a boat to avoid his creditors. He selected his writing team and Ethel Merman for the star role. The First draft of the show was called Crazy Week than Hard to Get and finally Anything Goes.
There are four versions of Anything Goes revived; the original 1934 libretto, the 1962 revival libretto, the 1987 revival libretto and the 2011 revival libretto. The story has been revised, although still containing the similar romantic complications aboard the S.S. American. It still featured the same major characters in the musical. The score was altered with some songs cut and others reassigned to different scenes and characters.
The musical played for 784 performances on Broadway at the Vivian Beaumont Theatre before it was revived in 2011 at the Stephen Sondheim Theater starring Sutton Foster and Joel Grey.
The story is set aboard the S. S. American ocean liner, where a nightclub singer Reno Sweeney is going from New York to England. Her friend, Billy Crocker has stowed away so he he can be near his love Hope Harcourt. The only problem is that Hope is engaged to engaged, Lord Evelyn Oakleigh. Also on board are Public Enemy #12, Moonface Martin and his sidekick Erma. Reno and Martin join forces to help Billy in his quest to win Hope’s heart.
Anything Goes has won three Tony Awards for Revival, Leading Actress and Choreography. It also won five Drama Desk Awards for Revival, Actress, Choreography, Sound Design and Set Design in 1987- 1988.
Anything Goes is a musical production worth the entire family watching. There are some slight sexual innuendos and a few jokes that may not be appropriate for all audiences. It is a fast-paced and for the most part a kid-friendly performance. For several years, the musical has been a popular choice for schools and communities. It is a must see musical production.
