Cirque du Soleil – Iris is located at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles and premiered September 2011 and is scheduled to run for 10 years. The name Iris is taken from the diaphragms of a camera and the colored iris of the human eye.
Cirque du Soleil is an entertainment company based in Montreal, Quebec, Canada and was found in 1984 by Guy Laliberté and Daniel Gauthier. It is named as the contemporary circus, which is a theatrical and character driven approach without animals performing.
The show combines the traditional Cirque du Soleil’s traditional artistic works of dance, modern circus traditions and acrobatics with the history of cinema and its genres and taking them into the heart of the movie making process. From illustration to animation, black and white to color, silent films to talkies, fixed shots to swooping camera movements, spectators witness the poetic construction/deconstruction of this art as an object and as a way of transcending reality.
There are 72 performers which include several who are Olympic athletes. The main characters are Buster who is a composer in search of true love, and Scarlett who is a naïve actress who longs to be a movie star. The different acts are meant to evoke the sense of wonder of cinema which include; Aerial straps dui, Shadows and contortion, Hand to hand, Filmstrip, Kiriki, Movie strip and several others.
The music is a pre-recorded music blend of 100 musicians spread over both large and small ensembles. This is then mixed with the show's live eight in-house musicians. Some of the music titles include; “Buster’s Big Opening,” “The Twins,” “Kiriki Film,” “Kiriki,” “Silent Movie,” “Patterns” and several others.
