Evita is a musical that concentrates on the charismatic and glamorous life of an Argentine political leader named Eva Perón; the second wife of Argentine president, Juan Perón. The story takes place in Buenos Aires and opens on the day of Eva's death in July of 1952. The story takes the audience back in time to 1934. Eva’s story unfolds from her early life, rise to power, charity work and then eventually to her death. From her humble beginning, she uses her beauty and charm to climb up the social pyramid. The best known song from the musical is the power ballad, “Don't Cry for Me Argentina.”
Evita began as a rock-opera concert album that debuted in 1976, which ended up leading to the productionin London’s West End in 1978 and a year later went on Broadway. It has been a commercial and critical success. For four years after 1979, the musical had 1,600 performances taking home seven Tony Awards including the coveted Best Musical honor at the 1980 award show.
