Initially, Les Miserables was released as a French-language concept album. It's first musical-stage adaptation was presented at a Paris sports arena, the Palais des Sports in 1980. In 1982, Cameron Mackintosh received a copy of the French concept album from director Peter Farago. He was impressed from his work and asked Cameron to produce an English-language version of the show. This version opened in London on 8 October 1985, at the Barbican Center. The characters of the musical are Jean Valjean, Marius, Cosette, Enjolras, Éponine, Gavroche, Young Cosette, Madame Thénardier, Thénardier, Fantine, Javert and many others. The musical ran at the Broadway Theatre through October 10, 1990. It was so liked by the people that its closing date was postponed from March 15, 2003 to May 18, 2003. The Broadway production was opened on March 12, 1987 and ran until May 18, 2003. After 6,680 performances in sixteen years, it is the third-longest-running Broadway musical in history. Les Miserables was positioned in a BBC Radio 2 listener poll of the "Nation's Number One Essential Musicals" in June 2005, receiving more than forty percent of the votes. It was nominated for 12 Tony Awards and won eight, including Best Musical and Best Original Score.
