Hairspray is a musical comedy about racism, which hit the floors for the first time in 1998. It was produced by Margo Lion and directed by Rob Marshall. Hairspray unfolds the story of a teenage girl and her big dreams in 1960's. The story revolves around Tracy Turnblad, the teenage girl. Other characters in the Hairspray includes Edna Turnblad- tracy's mother, Amber Von Tussle- resident princess of The Corny Collins Show, Velma Von Tussle- Amber's scheming mother and producer of The Corny Collins Show, Penny Pingleton- Tracy best friend, Link Larkin- a teenage heartthrob and one of The Corny Collins Show Council Members, Motormouth Maybelle- the owner of a downtown record shop and the host of "Negro Day" on The Corny Collins Show, Seaweed J. Stubbs- son of Motormouth Maybelle , Wilbur Turnblad- Tracy’s goofy father, Corny Collins- host of The Corny Collins Show and many other characters. The Original Broadway Production ran for more than six years, starting on August 15, 2002 and ending on January 4, 2009 after 2,642 performances. It became so popular in the nation that the the British television channel Sky1 decided to broadcast “Hairspray: The School Musical” in august 2008.
