Mary Poppins History
In 1993, theatrical producer Cameron Mackintosh met Pamela Travers, to have the rights for developing a stage play of her Mary Poppins books. After acquiring rights, Mackintosh and the head of Disney Theatrical Thomas Schumacher had a talk on a possible collaboration in 2001 so that the stage play would be able to use the songs from the Disney film. A preliminary outline of the show was written in 2002 after meeting all the requirements. When songwriters George Stiles and Anthony Drewe got to know about the project, they decided to write a demo version of a new introductory song independently for the character of Mary, titled "Practically Perfect". Both received the positive response from Mackintosh. As Julian Fellowes had the clear understanding of the social niceties of the English class system, he was incorporated in the team to write the script of the show. The important characters of the Mary Poppins include Mary Poppins, Bert, George Banks, Winifred Banks, Bird Woman, Mrs. Brill, Fannie, Katie Nanna, Luti and Miss Andrew. It was rehearsed with the cast of “My Fair Lady” for four weeks at Sadler's Wells. Later, the rehearsal was moved to Bristol and on September 15, 2004 , an out-of-town tryout opened at the Bristol Hippodrome. The Broadway production premiered on November 16, 2006 at the New Amsterdam Theatre. It surpassed “Pippin” on July 16, 2011 and became the the 30th longest running show in Broadway history.
