Perfect Crime is a 1987 murder mystery / thriller Off Broadway play written by Warren Manzi. It is currently the longest running play in New York history either on or Off Broadway with over 9,000 performances. The leading lady, Catherine Russell has remained with the show from the very first performance back in 1987.
The story is about Margaret Thorne Brent, an accomplished psychiatrist and a potential killer who may have committed the perfect crime. She gets caught in the middle of a terrifying game when her wealthy husband, W. Harrison Brent turns up dead. If Agatha Christie and Philip Roth collaborated on a murder mystery, the result might be the Perfect Crime.
The play takes in the sitting room of the Brent home in a Connecticut neighborhood. Over several nights the mystery unfolds as Psychiatrist Margaret, Thorne Brent is on the verge of best-selling, Oprah Winfrey success. A secret from her past threatens comes up trying to effect her present.
James Ascher is a local police inspector who’s interested in the case and possibly more. He is sent to investigate whether or not Margaret murdered or husband.
