The play unfolds at the outbreak of World War I when the story’s central character, a young boy named Albert, is forced to watch his beloved horse Joey be sold to the calvary and shipped to France. Albert is not old enough to enlist in the British Army so he takes off on a mission to save his horse and rescue him from the grips of this brutal war. The play follows the horse Joey after is rider, a Captain in the British Army, is killed and the horse is caught in the grips of war, death and disease and of Albert; desperate to bring his horse home.
The story takes a look at the characters two paralleling stories as well as life in World War I at the time. What is most impressive about this full theatrical production is the portrayal of the real hero of War Horse. The horses are brought to life with the help of South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company who have created moving and breathing full-scale horses that gallop and move with fluidity on stage as they capture the heart of the play.
