Although it is one of the smaller venues in New York City, there is no denying the major impact that Irving Plaza has had on the New York City music scene. Not to be confused with its neighboring theatre the Irving Place Theatre which was eventually demolished, the Irving Plaza is still very much a part of the New York City scene. The Irving Plaza can be found in the Union Square neighborhood of Manhattan in New York City where the building has been since it was first constructed in 1888. Although the building dates back many decades, the interior of the Irving Plaza is actually designed to be quite modern and pay homage to modern day rock music.
During its more than 100 year history, the building that now hosts the Irving Plaza has been a number of different things. This three level auditorium has been a ballroom, church, rock venue and even army veterans headquarters for the Polish army. However for the past few years those in the Manhattan neighborhood have simply known this historic building as Irving Plaza. During its history, this rock music venue has hosted a number of different performers and has been operated under a number of different names. Bands such as the Ramones, the B-52’s, the Talking Heads and more have all performed at the venue.
Today under the operation of Live Nation, the venue which holds a little over 1000 guests at a time continues to bring big name acts into the venue so fans can enjoy an up close and personal interaction with some of their favorite performers. Some of the venues recent performers have included acts such as Gotye, Waka Flocka Flame, Our Name is Fun and more. The venue is in place to bring fans up close and personal with some of their favorite groups in a more intimate settings and to introduce up and coming groups and performers to the New York City music scene. Fans of all types of musical acts can enjoy performances at this Manhattan theatre and inside one of the most historic and unique pop and rock clubs in the entire city.
