Known by many as The Joe or the JLA, Joe Louis Arena is one of the most famous hockey arenas in the entire world. Located in Detroit Michigan, the arena is the home of the Detroit Red Wings; the city’s NHL team. The venue is one of the few in the country to be an ice-hockey only arena. However, these aren’t the only record-breaking statistics of this arena. The Joe Louis Arena, which was named after the former heavyweight champion Joe Louis, is one of the three current NHL arenas in the United States that doesn’t have a corporate sponsorship. Joe Louis Arena is also the fourth oldest venue in the NHL today as it was built back in 1979. When the arena was constructed at this time it caused a great deal of controversy for its price tag. At the time it cost $57 million to construct.
The same year the arena was built the Detroit Red Wings played their first home game at the venue space. This event took place on December 27, 1979 against the St. Louis Blues. Since then, Joe Louis Arena has been home to all of the Detroit Red Wings home games. Many fans of the team believe that the arena actually brought luck to the team as they have had a great deal of success since moving to the facility and won four Stanley Cup championships wince calling the arena their home.
Although it was designed for ice hockey use, Joe Louis Arena has been transformed several times to hold different events as well. The venue has hosted the 1980 Republican National Convention, WWF and WWE Events, a Detroit Pistons playoff game, the 2006 WNBA Finals and several Arena Football League Games. However, for those who call Detroit home, Joe Louis Arena truly does belong to the Detroit Wed Rings. In fact, in 2006, the stadium renamed their West Entrance the “Gordie Howe Entrance” in honor of the legendary former Red Wing Player and even put up a statue in his honor. Although the maximum capacity of the arena has changed slightly with different additions to the venue space, when hockey events are held Joe Louis Arena can host more than 20,000 adoring fans during each game.
