Although it is officially known as the Prudential Center, this multi-purpose indoor arena has been known as a number of different names throughout the years. It has been known as everything from “The Pru Center” and “The Rock” to “The House That Lou Built.” No matter what local residents want to call it there is no denying that this arena is truly a one of a kind construction. This indoor arena can be found in the central business district of Newark, New Jersey in the greater New York Metropolitan Area and was established as a venue for all types of different events.
When it opened in 2007, the Prudential Center was known mainly for being the home of the National Hockey League team the New Jersey Devils. It was also created to be the home court of the NCAA Seton Hall Pirates men’s basketball team as well. During the renovations of Madison Square Garden, the Prudential Center was also home to numerous other teams including the WNBA’s New York Liberty. During this time the New Jersey Nets also called the arena home and used it from 2010-2012. When it first opened the Prudential Center was the first major league sports arena or venue to be constructed in the greater New York metropolitan area since the Brendan Bryne Arena in 1981. This made the opening of the arena a major event for those in the area who graciously welcomed the addition of a new professional sports venue.
Depending on the event, the center can host different numbers of fans and thanks to its unique design the Prudential Center can easily be changed to host numerous different types of sporting events. The center’s ice hock games and indoor lacrosse games can hold around 17, 625. Indoor soccer games can host 17,500 fans while most concerts can hold around 19,500 seated fans. When the arena is used for basketball games it can hold 18,711 fans.
