Hidden away and north of the downtown area of Chicago in the Uptown area of the city is one of the oldest and most unique musical venues that the Windy City has to offer. This West Lawrence Avenue ballroom and concert venue has a rich history that dates all the way back to the Prohibition-era and back to when the ballroom was first built in 1926. For many, it is the architectural style of this ballroom that makes it so unique as it takes into account Moorish architectural style on the outside of the building and is designed to resemble a Spanish village on the interior.
Know for its extravagant interior stylings the Aragon Ballroom has been a success in the city of Chicago since the moment it opened. According to many legends the Aragon Ballroom once hosted secret tunnels that went to the nearby Green Mill bar, a popular hangout for Al Capone, to the Aragon basement during the Prohibition. This unique history of the venue continued to 1958 when a massive fire destroyed part of the venue causing the Aragon to close down. Once it reopened it failed to find the same type of success it once had, and numerous new owners began coming in attempting to give their own spin to the Aragon Ballroom.
Eventually, the Ballroom started being revived by the rock and punk rock movements and when it was bought in 1990 it officially became known once again as a rock and music hall. Today, that success continues and thanks to the ballroom’s close proximity to the Chicago ‘L’ to city’s elevated public train, many find it effortless and convenient to flock to this hall for all types of events. Still today, the crowd for nightly performances will exceed 18,000 visitors whenever the Aragon Ballroom opens its doors, six nights each week. Today, guests can find a variety of different events at the hall and nearly every night of the week those in the Midwest and in areas of Canada can enjoy listening to an hour-long programming broadcast live from the ballroom. Now the venue hosts all types of Spanish and Vietnamese language shows, English rock concerts and even boxing events; proving that entertainment knows no limits at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago.
