Chicago Theatre Tickets
Originally named the Balaban and Katz Chicago Theatre, the Chicago Theater, is one of the best known venues in the city of Chicago. The building is a landmark theater that can be found on North State Street in the well-known loop area of the city. The theater was built in 1921 and until 1945 it was a well-known movie theater enterprise and served as the flagship theater for the Balaban and Katz group. In 1979, the theater was added to the National Register of Historic Places and in 1983 it became officially listed as a Chicago Landmark
Although many know the Chicago Theater for its rich history and for its numerous film and television appearances, the theater is still fully functioning today. The modern Chicago Theater serves as a prestigious performing arts venue and is owned by Madison Square Garden, Inc. The theater now hosts stage plays, comedy performances, public speeches and live concerts. Until 2008, the Chicago International Film Festival held their opening night production at the theater every year. The venue has gone under several renovations but is designed to still hold the same historical appeal it did when it was first created.
The Chicago Theater takes up nearly half a city block and is seven stories tall. The large famous light-up “Chicago” marquee is still positioned in front of the theater which also boasts the coat of arms from the Balaban and Katz chain. The grand lobby of the theater if five stories high and features a grand staircase and chandeliers that lead guests to the mezzanine and balcony levels of the theater. There are three levels of seats which allow for 3600 guests to sit comfortably, however, the venue has been known to make additional arrangements for special events.
Although many praise the Chicago Theater for its past accomplishments and its rich history, it is still a very covered modern day institution. With big acts from all over, including Nicki Minaj, Vince Vaughn, Barry Manilow and Fiona Apple still performing at the theater, this Chicago landmark is still one of the most sought-after performance venues in the Windy City.
