Over its long history, which has spanned more than five decades, Lambeau Field has been known for many things. However, for most people living in Wisconsin and those around the country, Lambeau Field is known primarily for being the home of the Green Bay Packers. Today the field is known by many as a few different nicknames. While many simply call it Packer stadium as it is is one of the few arenas in professional sports that is know for mainly only holding NFL games. It is also often called “Titletown, USA,” a name given by the Packers during their time as a dominant team. The field is also often called “The Frozen Tundra” as many of the coldest games in professional sports have been played at this field.
The stadium first opened back in 1957 under the name of the City Stadium, however in 1965 it was renamed in memory of the founder of the NFL Green Bay Packers and the long time head coach of the team, Curly Lambeau. To this day this name is still present on the side of the stadium as the city continues to honor the famous coach and football team owner. One of the main reasons why the name is able to stay on the side of the building is because the City of Green Bay actually owns the field, so there are no company vying for naming rights on the arena.
This field is one of the most famous in professional sports today not only for its longstanding history but for its long association with the Green Bay Packers professional football stadium. It is the second largest stadium in the state of Wisconsin and can hold more than 73,000 fans. Even though the history of this field dates back several decades, during its time as an arena, Lambeau Field has gone under several renovations to help it keep up to date with the advancements of many of the arenas in professional sports today. The field went under several expansions and a major renovation in 2003 and then again in 2012. The field is also known for its turf and for using Kentucky bluegrass instead of other field options.
Lambeau Field is primarily used for Packers games and for Packers shareholder meetings. however, there are some high school and college football games that are played on the field as well as a handful of hockey games as well.
