Found near Morrison, Colorado, the Red Rocks Amphitheater is one of the most unique and innovative concert arenas ever built. The venue is an open air theater that has been in production for more than 100 years. What makes the venue so innovative is that it is actually built into and around the famous red rocks of the Colorado mountains, providing a breathtaking backdrop for any concert event. At the venue site there is a signature disc shaped rock behind the stage and numerous other rocks sticking out from behind the stage that have made this stage so famous.
Known as much for being a natural marvel as for an amphitheater the unique design of this outdoor stage has brought in many touring acts to the city of Denver and to this park theater. The Red Rocks Amphitheater is currently owned by the City and County of Denver after it was purchased from a private owner and reconstructed in 1936. This was thirty years after the first recorded performance ever at the Red Rocks Amphitheater which was a musical performance of the Grand Opening of the Garden of the Titans from John Brisben Walker. There have also been numerous opera performances that took place during the early 1900s at the venue.
This tradition continued on into the 1960s when the first rock concert appeared at Red Rocks Amphitheater. This concert featured a sold-out performance from The Beatles in a record-breaking US show. Since the Beatles first opened up the Red Rocks Amphitheater to the idea of rock music numerous rock bands have come and performed at the center. This has included bands such as Jethro Toll, Sonny and Cher, U2 The Grateful Dead and Jimi Hendrix. Since then many modern day acts have come to the famous Red Rocks Amphitheater to perform and big names such as Gary Allen, Coldplay, Phish, Mumford and Sons and R.E.M. have actually recorded music at the unique and open venue. With a history such as this and such notable performances to its name there is no denying that this stunningly beautiful outdoor theatre has made a major impact on the music world during the last 100 years it has been in operation.
