Shea Stadium Tickets
The Shea Stadium, or the William A. Shea Municipal Stadium, which was the venue’s full name, was a large-multipurpose stadium located in New York City. The Shea Stadium could be found in Queens in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park. When the stadium was around, it was the home of Major League Baseball team the New York Mets; who used the stadium as their ball park from 1964 to 2008. Although the Mets had a home in the stadium, the Shea was originally constructed for multiple purposes and even had a device that would expand and rotate the playing field in the stadium. The versatility of the stadium also allowed it to be home to the New York Jets professional football team until 1983. For one year in 1975, four teams; the Jets, Mets, Giants and Yankees all shared the field.
The stadium had 57,343 seats and featured one of the larger scoreboards of its time as well as 21 escalators, 54 restrooms and a style that was unlike other sports venue. Throughout the years, the stadium went through numerous makeovers as it had to adapt to being able to host different sports team. Although the stadium was eventually demolished, when the Shea Stadium was around it hosted a number of events in addition to home baseball and football games.
The New York United American soccer team used the stadium, the Beatles kicked off their 1965 North American tour in the arena, and other artists like Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen and Garth Brooks have all performed in the stadium as well. The stadium has also been featured in television shows and movies and even served as a staging area for rescuers during the September 11 attacks.
Despite all of the history in the stadium, the stadium closed in 2008 and was eventually demolished in 2009 to make room for parking for the newly constructed Citi Field; created to be a new, larger and more high-tech home from the Mets. Although there are several features in the new Citi Field that pay homage to Shea Stadium, many of the features in the stadium that made the arena so famous within the league, were lost when the stadium was demolished. Now all New York Mets baseball activities and games are held in the Citi Field Stadium located across the street from Shea’s former location.
