Once known as the Louisiana Superdome, the Mercedes-Benz Superdome is a premier sports arena that can be found in the hear of the Central Business District of New Orleans, Louisiana. The plans for this massive dome arena were actually first created back in 1967. It wasn’t until 1971 that ground broke for the New Orleans area and it was nearly four years later to the day that the arena finally opened to the public. Today, the Mercedes-Benz Superdome is home to the New Orleans Saints of the NFL and also to the Tulane Green Wave football team. Once again in 2013 the Mercedes-Benz Superdome will be hosting Super Bowl XLVII. In addition to it being a prime choice for big events such as this because of the city surrounding the dome, this Superdome is also a popular destination because of its size. To date the Mercedes-Benz Superdome is the largest fixed dome structure in the world. It currently covers more than 13 acres in size and can hold 73,208 fans for football games; and this size can be expanded to 76,468 if needed. For basketball games it can hold 55,675 fans making it a popular location for some of the sporting world’s most attended events.
