Located in the “Loop” area of the city of Chicago is one of the Windy City’s most popular arenas; the United Center. This indoor sports arena is known for hosting a variety of entertainment events for the city of Chicago. The United Airlines owned indoor arena is not only one of the most popular arenas in Chicago but one of the biggest in the country are well. Standing at a massive 960,000 square feet, the United Center is the largest arena in the United State based on physical size. Although there are other arenas that have larger seating capacities the large size of the United Center alone makes it one of the most recognized arenas in the country. For more events, the arena can sit around 19,700 patrons. However, thanks to standing room options the United Center often exceeds capacity especially for big sporting events.
The two primary events that take place at the United Center are NBA home games with the Chicago Bulls and NHL home games with the Chicago Blackhawks. The arena was constructed back in 1994 as a replacement for the famous Chicago Stadium arena and was designed specifically with both of these teams in mind. Since it was first created, it has become one of the most popular destinations in all of Chicago. The arena also has hosted some of the biggest moments in Chicago sports history, many of which are honored inside the halls of the massive events. The arena is known for holding many major NBA events during the high reign of the Chicago Bulls in the mid to late 1990s.
In addition to home Blackhawks and Bulls games, the United Center hosts an estimated 200 events in the arena each and every year. Thousands of fans come to the stadium to see their favorite events live and to take part in the famous United Center “roar.” This roaring sound is created by the acoustics in the arena which were actually put in place on purpose specifically for home sporting events. When the hold Chicago Stadium had this sound it was thought to be intimidating to opposing teams so the creators of the new United Center wanted to recreate this sound in the new arena. The result is a larger than life sound that fans of the city’s major sports teams must hear in order to believe.
