The Virginia Cavaliers were established in 1888. Between 1900 and 1915, the team scored 10 winning seasons with players like Robert K. "Bobby" Gooch and Eugene N. "Buck" Mayer. In 1915 season, the Virginia defeated the Ivy League. This victory became the biggest all-time win in the Virginia's history a no other Southern team had ever defeated the Ivy League. Dr. Rice Warren was hired as coach in 1920. The team finished the 1920 season with 5–2–2 record. They posted best records during 1924-1927 season. The Virginia went 4–5 in 1940 and 8–1 in 1941. In 1947 season, the Virginia defeated Harvard by a score of 47–0. The gridiron success of the late 1940s continued into the early 1950s. The team lost only five games from 1950 through 1952. After a long debut, the team joined ACC on December 4, 1953. The Virginia Cavaliers failed to win in their initial season in ACC. George Welsh was hired as the head coach of team in 1982. The team went 2–9 and 6–5 in his first two campaigns. In 1984 season, the Virginia set a record of 8–2-2. They made it to the bowl game and won the Peach Bowl after defeating Purdue by a score of 27-24. The team has won three conference titles since their inception. The Virginia Cavaliers play home games at Scott Stadium.
