Washington St. Cougars History
The Washington St. Cougars were established in 1893. They played their first season in 1894 and went 1-1 with .500 winning percentage under the coach Shawn O'Hara. In the following year, Grant Walker was appointed as the head coach of the Washington St. Cougars. He led the team to 2-0 in 1895 season with 1.000 winning percentage. After playing few mediocre seasons, William Henry Dietz was hired as the head coach of the team in 1915. He guided the team from 1915-1917. Under his tenure, the Washington St. Cougars compiled an overall 17-2-1 record. Another wave of success came in 1926, when O.E. Hollingbery became the head coach of the St. Cougars. He stuck to the team till 1942. Under his leadership as the head coach, the team set a record of 93-53-14 with .625 winning percentage. During 1943-44 season, the Washington did not played any matches due to World War II. In 1987, Dennis Erickson was recruited as the head coach of the Washington St. Cougars. He led the team for two years and compiled a record of 12-10-1 with .543 winning percentage. The team has won 4 conference titles since their formation. The Washington St. Cougars play their home games at Martin Stadium.
