The West Virginia Mountaineers were established in 1891. They played their first match on November 28, 1891. The early 1900s brought good fortune for the team. They posted 7-1 and 8-1 record in 1903 and 1905 season. Under the tenure of C.A. Lueder during 1908–11, the team set a 17-13-3 record. Mont McIntire became the head coach of the team for 1916–17 and 1919–20 season. The Virginia finished the 1919 season by a score of 8-2. The McIntire's team compiled a 24-11-4 record. They started the 1920s with a bang! Clarence Spears became the head coach of the team in 1921. In 1922, they became the only team in West Virginia history to produce an undefeated season with a 10-0-1 mark. Also, they gave their first bowl game appearance in 1922 and thrashed the Gonzaga in the East-West Bowl. During the four year tenure of Spears, the team had an impressive 30-6-3 record with the Mountaineers. The team was one of the successful team during the 1950s under the coaching of Art Pappy Lewis. The Mountaineers gave their first winning season in 1952, finishing with a 7-2 record. They have won 15 conference titles since their establishment. The West Virginia Mountaineers play their home games at Mountaineer Field at Milan Puskar Stadium.
